“in baghdad, her birthplace, she was a child prodigy, so early in her career her status was established and secure.”

Suad Al-Attar (b. 1940) is an Iraqi-born artist and the first female to have exhibited there solo in 1960.

Suad studied in California and Baghdad University before moving to London in 1976 and graduating from Wimbledon School of Art and Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martins).

“a comparison between the early works and the latter shows how carefully she has moved forward, taking each step with deliberation. by staking her claim to be seen early on, while she was at school, and then again at twenty, suad set an example for those that follow.”

As well as exhibiting in private and group showcases across the world, Suad has won several awards for her work, including the Miro Award, Madrid (1984), the Gold Medal, 1st Prize at the First International Biennial, Cairo (1984) and the Award of Distinction at the First International Biennial, Malta (1995).

Her work is held in public and private collections worldwide, including The British Museum in London and Mathaf Museum of Modern Arab Art in Doha, Qatar.

“encrypted in her painting is her endurance, an unflagging commitment to an undefined but beckoning achievement.”

“an artist should be a free spirit….
for me, every painting is a new beginning.”
